Butter Fly – New and Innovative Ultra-Lightweight Automatic Transport System Bi-Rail

Butterfly Project: The Butterfly project is a completely innovative (perhaps even visionary) project, a new and effective means of transportation that can be used to travel short distances but at high frequency and to transport passengers between two or more points on a route using structures that may already be built or even duplicated and overlapped to great effect. The shuttle, designed using techniques already tested in other projects, is based on extruded aluminum honeycomb structures that allow for great rigidity combined with the lightness with which they can be constructed, allowing them to be applied even to existing load-bearing structures such as bridges, guardrails, and already built structures for viaducts or other structures. Its extreme lightness (butterfly is not a random name) allows it to transport up to 20 people with a total weight of approximately 5 tons. Another innovative feature is its driverless driving and the possibility of using on-demand transport since, thanks to the advanced technology used, it will be possible to deploy the right number of shuttles to meet the actual transport needs at any given time. The low impact of the structure is also one of the features that make Butterfly a highly effective system.

Autonomous driving transport (SIL3) for up to 20 passengers. 60km/h Max Speed: 3 Torque Motors on the 3 Wheels, Total Drive: 80KW. Railway-type Shuttle Support Group: 8 Cast Iron Wheels and 3 Rubber Wheels for Traction. Gradeability: 10/12° when fully loaded. Electric traction from Batteries or Supercapacitors with a 1500 m travel distance between charges. Contactless charging at passenger stations. It uses all eco-sustainable systems; the structure can support solar panels and self-generate the energy needed for its movement. The structure has a low environmental impact due to its very slim design, with the shuttles weighing less than 5T when fully loaded. Butterfly does not require additional land and intelligently overlaps spaces already used for other transportation systems, such as roads or bridges.

Butterfly, holder of Italian Patent No.102013902132501  and European Patent No.2772405,  is improperly classified as a mono-rail but in fact, two shuttles can travel in the same or opposite direction through a lightweight, specially designed structure. It can also support variable load factors based on service demand, and if necessary, given the automatic piloting system, multiple shuttles can be sent with an electronic tracking system (at a distance of 20-30 meters) without compromising the support structure.

The system is highly versatile and can be installed in various configurations, including overlapping roads, bridges, and cycle paths, without requiring new real space, which often no longer exists in cities. The system allows the shuttle to remain attached to a guide rail and be propelled by three wheels with an electric motor acting on the side of the support structure.
